HIGHER UP IN THE PYRENEES !PIC DU MIDI

At the ski resort of LA MONGIE a cable car will take you up 2877m high to discover a most exceptional panorama on the Pyrenean Chain with a 360° view ! The Pic du Midi de Bigorre is among the greatest sites of Midi-Pyrenees (Occitanie). Year 1878 marked the start in the building of the Observatory. Since then it developped into a prominent centre for scientific research and observation. It has been open to the public since year 2000.

To be found at the Pic du Midi :

  • a 360° view on the Pyrenees Chain
  • a “pontoon” in the sky = a 12 meter long impressive footbridge above the 1000 meter drop below – with a glass floor !
  • a planetarium

A Starry Sky Reserve …

RICE  =  “Réserve Internationale de Ciel Etoilé”. Inside which measures have been taken in order to diminish light pollution, to enjoy and enhance the beauty of a pure sky. A project  which a great number of Hautes-Pyrenees villages have adopted.

The Pic du Midi, on foot …

Trained hikers may also reach the top of the Pic on their two feet only ! A 2h30′ excursion, an 800 meters climb. Breath-taking views on arrival – provided you’ve got any breath left !!!

The lake of Oncet…

This lake is situated at the foot of the Pic, not far from the Tourmalet Pass. A progressive walk upwards will take you to discover the Pic and its observatory. On the way you may come across sheep and llamas flocks… and even find the lake fringed with ice…
Start from the Tourmalet Road, coming from Barèges, 1km before reaching the pass.
