CAUTERETS PYRENEESPONT D’ESPAGNE

One of the greatest sites in Occitanie – only a few kilometers from Cauterets, Pont d’Espagne is a heavenly place right in the heart of the Pyrenees National Park.

Pont d’Espagne was an important communication site where exchanges and trade with Spain flourished long ago. There you will find waterfalls, lakes, altitude grazing fields, wild flowers… as well as discover the richness of pyrenean wildlife. This magical place located right in the heart of the National Park is an ideal starting point for many a mountain walk, of all grades, as well as rock climbing.

Starting from (or nearby) Pont d’Espagne – Cauterets:

Lac de Gaube

Accessible on foot from Pont d’Espagne with GR10, approx. 1.30 to 2hours’ return walk. Or with cable-car (15mns’walk on easy path). Possibily to extend from Lac de Gaude to Les Oulettes towards Mount Vignemale (3298m.), he highest peak in the French Pyrenees.

Marcadau Valley

Starting from Pont d’Espagne, this valley along the Gave offers magnificent mountainscapes with a few mountain lakes scattered here and there (lac Nère, la d’Aratille, lac Pourtet, lacs de Cambalès…).

Fruitière Valley

Between Cauterets and Pont d’Espagne. A pleasant and easy walk, suitable for families and children, with probable encounters with cattle grazing the « estive » fields (summer altitude fields), marmots on stony slopes, izards (mountain bighorn sheep)… Following the Gave will take you to Refuge Wallon and the lakes of Estom, Estom-Soubiran, and Labas.
